A personal safety app is being rolled out across Stoke-on-Trent and Newcastle-under-Lyme through a partnership between Staffordshire Police, Stoke-on-Trent City Council, Newcastle-under-Lyme Borough Council, and the local Business Improvement District.

WalkSafe offers a range of tools for people travelling at night — including live location sharing with trusted contacts, journey planning and tracking, and access to a UK-wide map of accredited safe spaces and venues. It’s free to download and designed to be straightforward to use.

The rollout is framed around women’s safety in particular, with the partnership citing research suggesting the majority of women factor personal safety into their journey home from a night out. The app builds on existing community safety infrastructure across Staffordshire rather than replacing it.

Notably, WalkSafe’s safe spaces map covers the whole of the UK, meaning it may already be useful to people in Scotland. It’s worth checking whether Scottish venues and safe spaces are currently represented — and whether local partnerships might want to engage with the platform to add to that coverage.

The app is available on Android and Apple. More information at walksafe.io.
