A visual tool for understanding the complexity of community safety
What makes a community feel safe? It's not a simple question — and there's no simple answer.
The Community Safety Map is a practical tool developed through our 2021 research with MainStreet Consulting from the What Makes a Safe Community project. It visualises the many interconnected factors that contribute to a safe community, from safe homes and public spaces to community engagement, resilience and sense of place.
The map shows that community safety operates within a complex environment, with influences at local, regional and national levels. It highlights that collective action from multiple stakeholders is needed to shift the system — and that no single intervention works in isolation.
Use this tool to:
- Understand the breadth of community safety as a concept
- Identify how different factors connect and influence each other
- Support strategic planning and partnership discussions
- Explore where intervention might have the greatest impact
