This is some of the feedback we received – having just completed recruitment from a shortlist of terrific candidates – which we’re quite proud of.

In my experience, interview structure should be carefully and thoughtfully designed, to help make applicants feel comfortable, confident, and encouraged to show you the best of themselves. The process should be free of ego or judgement, and provide people the best chance to demonstrate who they are in a short space of time.

Scottish Community Safety Network (SCSN) shared interview questions ahead of time with applicants which – in our minds – allows people time to digest and prepare their answers, just as you would in the workplace. There’s little to be gained or learned from concealing questions, that’s just not real. In fact, making the process fully transparent, being clear about what you want and your expectations of others, helps folk understand where to aim. We tried to think through what our applicants’ questions might be of us, to help inform how we built a recruitment experience based on their needs, as much as ours.

Importantly, we wanted our candidates to leave feeling positive about themselves, whether they were successful or not. We provided detailed, personalised feedback afterwards which stressed their strengths, and highlighted areas for improvement.

All this to say, it takes time and effort to do recruitment well – especially if you’re a wee team like us – but it’s an investment that will be rewarded with the right skills, experience and personalities for your organisation. And it’s fair.
