CashBack for Communities
This session introduced our members to CashBack for Communities — a Scottish Government programme that does exactly what it sounds like: money recovered from the proceeds of crime gets reinvested directly into young people’s lives.
Since launching in 2008, CashBack has committed £130 million, supported 1.3 million young people, and delivered over 2.5 million activities across all 32 local authorities. Those are significant numbers. The session focused on the current Phase 6 (2023–2026), which funds trauma-informed, person-centred services for young people aged 10–25, with five core outcomes: diversion from the justice system, positive destinations, improved health and wellbeing, contributing to communities, and building personal skills and resilience.
The breadth of partners involved is striking — from Barnardo’s Scotland and Action for Children to Rangers Charity Foundation, YDance, and the National Autistic Society. The programme deliberately casts a wide net, recognising that what works for one young person won’t work for another.
A case study from Rangers Charity Foundation illustrated the kind of impact CashBack funding can have when channelled through trusted community organisations.
